by To All My Black Girls on August 09, 2024

Being black, we’re deeply connected to our hair. It’s  an extension of ourselves that we get to experiment with and express ourselves with. So, the big chop is a pretty big deal! In case you don’t know what it is, let’s start with the definition. The big chop is when you decide to cut off your processed or relaxed hair, to begin your natural hair journey.

In this article, we are going to discuss a few things you can expect when you do the big chop including some advice for each phase of the big chop.

1. Shock: You May Look Different

You finally took the leap of faith! You did it! As you look at yourself in the mirror the full magnitude of what you’ve done hits you. You’re feeling proud of yourself and looking forward to enjoying healthy, springy curls. Feelings of insecurity can definitely start to crop up as you’re wondering - what next?  You might even struggle to feel as feminine as you did before.

Advice: Take a deep breath in and release. understand that this new journey is a chance to connect with your true self on a deeper level, focus on self love and getting back in touch with your natural roots. Focus on keeping your tresses luscious and bouncy by using water based moisturising hair products as often as needed. Sparingly use your favourite oil to lock the moisture in. Most women find their hair can be quite dry in the beginning stages.

2. Your Hair May Not Grow Back As Quickly As You Want

Each person's hair growth rate varies but you will may notice that your hair takes sometime to grow as long as you want it to, Just  be patient. Your new inches will come in soon enough with the proper haircare.

Advice: Natural texture clip ins are a great choice to transform your look and a touch of glamour. Since you can put them in and take them out, you can definitely keep up with your regular hair routine. Check out our luxurious collection of clip ins here

The final phase of your big chop is when you start to really enjoy going natural. At this stage you have probably finally got a mini ‘fro and you’re ready to amp things up to the next level. From vibrant, show stopping colour, to micro links and wefts - the possibilities are endless.
